Effect of temperature and photoperiod on the life cycle in lineages of Myzus persicae nicotianae and Myzus persicae s. str. (Hemiptera: Aphididae)Despoina POUPOULIDOU, John T. Entomol. 103 (2): 337-346, 2006 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2006.044 Male production was examined in 70 Myzus persicae s.str and M. persicae nicotianae clonal lineages at 17°C and 10L : 14D. Sixty nine were characterised by a partial loss of sexuality (androcyclic producing few males, and intermediates producing some males and mating females), and one was found to be permanently parthenogenetic. High within and between lineage variation was detected. Most (81%) of the clonal lineages produced few males (0-5 males per parent) and only 6% had male production (10-16 males per parent) comparable to that (12-23 males per parent) of seven lineages with a sexual phase (holocyclic) which were examined under the same conditions. The length of prenatal exposure to 10L : 14D increased the production of males. Continuous rearing under 10L : 14D at 12°C adversely affected male production in another intermediate clonal lineage. Temperature was found to affect the production of sexuals and to modify the short day photoperiodic response. The production of males and mating females was higher at 12°C than at 17°C in most of the 20 aforementioned clonal lineages with a partial loss of sexuality. Six lineages were permanently parthenogenetic at 17°C, but two of them produced a few males and the other four a few males and mating females at 12°C. Seven lineages which produced a few males at 17°C, also produced some mating females at 12°C. Lastly, photoperiod similarly affected the production of sexuals in two of the aforementioned clonal lineages, one with a sexual phase and one intermediate, although the regimes for the peak of sexuals were different. In both lineages, however, males appeared in a 0.5-1 h shorter scotophase than mating females. |
More than one species of Messor harvester ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Central EuropeBirgit C. SCHLICK-STEINER, Florian M. Entomol. 103 (2): 469-476, 2006 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2006.060 It is commonly held that Central Europe harbours but a single harvester ant species, namely Messor structor. Recently discovered bionomic differences between two Central European populations, which may reflect interspecific variation, cast doubt on this assumption. In the present study we test alternative hypotheses - one versus two harvester ant species in Central Europe and adjacent regions - by investigating the genetic diversity of ants determined as M. structor or close to it ("M. cf. structor"). Sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene revealed two major lineages of different but partially overlapping geographic distributions, both occurring in Central Europe. The existence of a cryptic species within M. cf. structor is the most plausible interpretation, since the sequence divergence between the two major lineages equals those between M. capitatus, M. concolor and M. bouvieri. The phylogenetic analyses revealed a distinct substructuring for both of the detected major lineages and the possible existence of additional cryptic species. |
Effect of early succession in wildflower areas on bug assemblages (Insecta: Heteroptera)Thomas FRANK, Irene KÜNZLEEur. J. Entomol. 103 (1): 61-70, 2006 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2006.011 One way of reducing the rapid decline in biological diversity in agricultural landscapes is to establish wildflower areas. The species richness and abundance of heteropteran bugs in twenty 1- to 4-year-old wildflower areas and winter wheat fields were compared, and the effects of succession in the wildflower areas investigated. Vegetation and environmental parameters (plant species richness, vegetation structure, flower abundance, field size, surrounding landscape) and their effects on bug species were explored. Total species richness and abundance of bugs were significantly lower in wheat fields than in wildflower areas but did not differ in the wildflower areas of different ages. The numbers of zoophagous bugs in the wildflower areas were positively correlated with the age of the wildflower areas. Correspondence analysis showed that the bug species composition in the winter wheat fields was very similar but strongly separated from that in the wildflower areas. The species composition of bugs in the wildflower areas became increasingly dissimilar with advancing successional age. In a partial canonical correspondence analysis, the bug assemblage was significantly associated with the number of perennial plant species, the number of annual plant species and vegetation structure, which accounted for 13.4%, 12.6% and 7.2% of the variance, respectively. As wildflower areas clearly increased heteropteran diversity on arable land and bug species composition changed with increasing successional stage, the establishment of a mosaic of wildflower areas of different age is recommended as it enables the survival of heteropteran bugs with different life history traits. |
Life history correlates and reproductive biology of Laelius pedatus (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) in The NetherlandsPeter J. MAYHEW, Wijnand R.B. HEITMANSEur. J. Entomol. 97 (3): 313-322, 2000 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2000.048 Bethylid wasps are a medium sized family of parasitic Hymenoptera, with biological control potential, which have recently proved excellent model systems for testing evolutionary and life history theory. We report observations on a species of Laelius from The Netherlands. The species is morphologically indistinguishable from Laelius pedatus, previously reported only from the New World. Reciprocal crosses between the Dutch wasps and L. pedatus from Madison, Wisconsin, USA confirmed that the Dutch population belongs to L. pedatus. We compared the life history of the Dutch wasps with those from Madison by rearing them on Trogoderma glabrum, but found no significant differences. The Dutch wasps successfully parasitize Trogoderma angustum, an invasive museum and domestic pest found in situ, but suffer high developmental mortality on T. glabrum. Wasp egg size was positively correlated with the size of ovipositing female, which was also negatively correlated with the developmental mortality of offspring. Larger wasps also carried more mature eggs. Time taken to lay the clutch increased with the size of the eventual clutch laid and was longer in unmated than mated females. When some wasps died before completing development, surviving members of the brood grew to a larger size and took longer to complete development. The number of males per brood increased with previous oviposition experience, an indication of sperm depletion through life. We discuss the implications of these trends for parasitoid life history theory. |
Life table parameters of the pseudococcid predators Nephus includens and Nephus bisignatus (Coleoptera: Coccinelidae)Dimitris C. KONTODIMAS, Panagiotis G. MILONAS, George J. STATHAS, Leonidas P. Entomol. 104 (3): 407-415, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.060 The fecundity of the pseudococcid predators Nephus includens (Boheman) and N. bisignatus (Kirsch) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), fed on Planococcus citri Risso (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), was studied at several constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 32.5 and 35°C). With additional data for the development of the immature stages, life-fecundity tables were constructed and some population parameters calculated. The average total fecundities of N. includens at the above temperatures were 49.2, 97.8, 162.8, 108.5, 87.4 and 31.1 eggs/female, and average longevities 99.5, 84.7, 69.5, 61.1, 49.6 and 30.1 days, respectively. The net reproductive rates (Ro) were 8.0, 32.2, 60.7, 32.6, 20.7 and 2.6 females/female, and the intrinsic rates of increase (rm) 0.014, 0.041, 0.083, 0.086, 0.077 and 0.024 females/female/day, respectively. The average total fecundities of N. bisignatus at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 32.5 ¿C were 54.7, 72.1, 96.9, 56.0 and 22.8 eggs/female, and average longevities 116.1, 108.7, 71.8, 68.8 and 43.7 days, respectively. The net reproductive rates (Ro) were 13.9, 26.4, 31.3, 15.2 and 3.6 females/female and the intrinsic rates of increase (rm) were 0.017, 0.035, 0.060, 0.051 and 0.024 females/female/day, respectively. The survival of females at each temperature was fitted using a Weibull distribution [S(t) = exp(-(t/b)c)]. Furthermore two mathematical models [Enkegaard equation: F = (a+b+x).e(c+d.x), Analytis equation: F = a.(x-xmin)n .(xmin- x)m] were fitted to the fecundity data. |
A serine protease from the midgut of the bumblebee, Bombus ignitus (Hymenoptera: Apidae): cDNA cloning, gene structure, expression and enzyme activityYoung Moo CHOO, Kwang Sik LEE, Hyung Joo YOON, Sang Beom LEE, Ji Hyeon KIM, Hung Dae SOHN, Byung Rae JINEur. The B. ignitus serine protease (BiSP) gene spans 1702 bp and consists of four introns and five exons coding for 250 amino acid residues. Southern blot analysis of genomic DNA suggested that BiSP gene is a single copy gene. The cDNA encoding BiSP was expressed as a 28-kDa polypeptide in baculovirus-infected insect cells and the recombinant BiSP showed activity in a protease enzyme assay. BiSP was specifically expressed in the midgut of B. ignitus queens, males, and workers, suggesting that the BiSP is a gut enzyme involved in the digestion of dietary proteins. |

Variability in the karyotypes, testes and ovaries of planthoppers of the families Issidae, Caliscelidae, and Acanaloniidae (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea)Anna MARYAŃSKA-NADACHOWSKA, Valentina G. Entomol. 103 (3): 505-513, 2006 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2006.066 The aim of this study was to obtain information on the karyotypes, testes and ovaries of three fulgoroid families, mainly in the Issidae but also in the Caliscelidae and Acanaloniidae. For the Issidae, the data is for 19 species belonging to 11 genera of the subtribes Issina (2 species, 1 genus), Hysteropterina (14 species, 9 genera) and Agalmatiina (3 species, 2 genera) of the tribe Issini. The male karyotypes are shown to be quite uniform across the tribe, with 2n = 26 + X in all species studied except Latilica maculipes (Melichar, 1906) with 2n = 24 + X. The modal karyotype, 2n = 26 + X, matches the most probable ancestral state in the Fulgoroidea. In the majority of cases the number of seminal follicles in males and ovarioles in females are stable within but fairly variable among the species, the modal value of the follicle number is 10 per testis. Contrary to what might be expected from other fulgoroid families, such as the Dictyopharidae and Delphacidae, the variability in these characters revealed neither regular trends nor evident correspondence with the taxonomy of Issidae. In the Caliscelidae, all species studied had testes consisting of 6 follicles each and karyotypes of 2n = 24 + X and 26 + XY, respectively, in 3 and 1 species. The only representative studied of the Acanaloniidae, Acanalonia bivittata (Say, 1825), had 2n = 24 + X and 13 follicles in its testis. The variability in all the characters investigated is discussed and compared to other fulgoroid families, primarily to the most extensively studied families, Delphacidae and Dictyopharidae. |
Evolutionary history and patterns of differentiation among European Maniola butterflies (Lepidoptera: Satyrinae)Andrea GRILL, Erasmia GKIOKIA, Nadir ALVAREZEur. J. Entomol. 103 (3): 613-618, 2006 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2006.082 Phylogenetic relationships of European Maniola butterflies are reconstructed using molecular sequences from two regions of the mitochondrial DNA, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome b (Cytb). A total of 988 base pairs (486 for Cytb, and 502 for COI) were aligned for 15 individuals of Maniola and an outgroup species. The phylogenetic tree obtained through Bayesian inference analysis of the combined data sets shows evidence that the island endemic M. chia is indistinguishable from M. jurtina on the basis of the mtDNA genes studied. Net nucleotide divergence between M. jurtina and M. chia is 0.4%, but 2% between the M. jurtina and the M. nurag clade. A phenetically distinct entity of individuals from Sardinia appears to be a hybrid between M. nurag and M. jurtina. The southern and northern European ecotypes of M. jurtina, which differ in the summer aestivation period of the southern type, are not structured genetically at the level of coding mtDNA genes. Divergence time between M. nurag and M. jurtina was estimated to be 1.1 to 1.2 million years. Speciation most likely took place in the early Pleistocene as a consequence of the isolation of Sardinia, when the sea reflooded the Mediterranean basin after the Messinian crisis (about 5 million years ago). |

Adult feeding increases fecundity in female Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)Zeng-Ming SONG, Zhe LI, Dian-Mo LI, Bao-Yu XIE, Jing-Yuan XIAEur. J. Entomol. 104 (4): 721-724, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.091 The availability and quality of nectar for adults are thought to affect fecundity of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Experiments were conducted to analyze the effect of adult feeding on the fecundity, and oviposition pattern of moths, and larval performance (egg hatch). The moths were fed either on distilled water, honey solution, or one of a range of concentrations of sucrose solution. The results showed that diets with sugars significantly increased fecundity and adult lifespan. Lifespan, total numbers of eggs and egg mass were significantly higher for females that fed on sugar during adult life. Egg hatch (a measure of offspring fitness) decreased over time regardless of sucrose concentration, but had always higher levels in the groups fed sugars. The peak of the ovipositing period was delayed and prolonged, with more eggs deposited, when moths were fed on sugar solution. In conclusion, adult feeding increases the fecundity of female moths and plays an important role in enhancing the fitness of individual cotton bollworm offspring. |
Population, ecology and morphology of Saga pedo (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) at the northern limit of its distributionAnton KRI©TÍN, Peter KAŇUCHEur. J. Entomol. 104 (1): 73-79, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.012 The bush-cricket Saga pedo, one of the largest predatory insects, has a scattered distribution across 20 countries in Europe. At the northern boundary of its distribution, this species is most commonly found in Slovakia and Hungary. In Slovakia in 2003-2006, 36 known and potentially favourable localities were visited and at seven this species was recorded for the first time. This species has been found in Slovakia in xerothermic forest steppes and limestone grikes (98% of localities) and on slopes (10-45°) with south-westerly or westerly aspects (90%) at altitudes of 220-585 m a.s.l. (mean 433 m, n = 20 localities). Most individuals (66%) were found in grass-herb layers 10-30 cm high and almost 87% within 10 m of a forest edge (oak, beech and hornbeam being prevalent). The maximum density was 12 nymphs (3rd-5th instar) / 1000 m2 (July 4, 510 m a.s.l.). In a comparison of five present and previous S. pedo localities, 43 species of Orthoptera were found in the present and 37 in previous localities. The mean numbers and relative abundance of species in present S. pedo localities were also significantly higher. S. pedo individuals at the northern boundary of their distribution were expected to be smaller and lighter because of suboptimal ecological conditions there. However, the body size of S. pedo individuals from these areas were similar to the average value for the whole area. Based on analyses of present and former localities and the Orthopteran assemblages around S. pedo, the factors endangering this species, and methods for conserving it and its habitat are discussed. |
A revision of Metriorrhynchus from the Philippines with molecular evidence of an Australian origin of the Oriental Metriorrhynchus fauna (Coleoptera: Lycidae)Ladislav BOCÁK, Kiyoshi MATSUDA, Takashi YAGIEur. J. Entomol. 103 (1): 115-126, 2006 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2006.017 The Metriorrhynchus fauna of the Philippines is revised. All known species are redescribed and seven new species are added: M. isarogensis sp. n., M. menieri sp. n., M. mindanaoensis sp. n., M. newbataanensis sp. n., M. ochii sp. n., M. palawanensis sp. n., and M. takedai sp. n. Additionally, M. yoshioi sp. n. is described from Sulawesi. Xylobanus longissimus Pic, 1922 is transferred to Metriorrhynchus, and Metriorrhynchus pallidus (Dalman in Schoenherr, 1818) is transferred to Leptotrichalus Kleine, 1925. The dispersal routes and speciation of Metriorrhynchus from the Philippines, Sulawesi and the Oriental Region were studied using mtDNA markers. One dispersal event is supposed for establishing of the Greater Sunda Islands fauna and another one for the Philippine fauna. Both faunas underwent speciation in the respective areas and all species show high degree of endemism. The Metriorrhynchus in Palawan is of Philippine origin in contrast with the tectonic history of Palawan and its connection with Borneo during the last glacial maximum. |
The Permostridulidae fam. n. (Panorthoptera), a new enigmatic insect family from the Upper Permian of FranceOlivier BÉTHOUX, André NEL, Jean LAPEYRIE, Georges GANDEur. J. Entomol. 100 (4): 581-585, 2003 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2003.087 The unusual wing characters of the Permian insect Permostridulus brongniarti gen. n., sp. n. justifies the creation of a new family, the Permostridulidae fam. n., within the Panorthoptera. Phylogenetic relationships with the extinct order Caloneurodea, related to the Orthoptera (crickets, grasshoppers), are assumed. This assumption suggests an occurrence of the Permostridulidae at least since the Upper Carboniferous. The most prominent feature of the wing venation is a stridulatory apparatus, nonhomologous with those previously known in "panorthopterid" lineages. This is the oldest recorded sound-producing device of an animal. |
Mating behaviour of Aphidius ervi (Hymenoptera: Braconidae): The role of antennaeDonatella BATTAGLIA, Nunzio ISIDORO, Roberto ROMANI, Ferdinando BIN, Francesco PENNACHIOEur. J. Entomol. 99 (4): 451-456, 2002 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2002.057 In the mating behaviour of Aphidius ervi Haliday the antennae play a pivotal role in partner recognition and acceptance. Mating failure was always observed when antennal contact was experimentally prevented. The male of A. ervi has filiform antennae, consisting of scape, pedicel and 18-20 cylindrical antennomeres (flagellar segments), which bear numerous types of sensory structures and, interspersed among the multiporous plate sensilla, especially on the 1th and 2nd flagellar segments, scattered pores. A secretion oozes from these pores in virgin males exposed to conspecific females. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that these pores are the external openings of integumentary glands. Behavioural and morpho-functional observations indicated that a double step sex recognition mechanism is present in A. ervi, as in other parasitic Hymenoptera. Basically, female recognition by males appears to be mediated by a volatile sex pheromone, that triggers the behavioural sequence leading to mounting. Then, the female recognizes and accepts the male after antennal contact. This is mediated by the secretion that oozes from the male antennal glands, which acts as a contact pheromone. |
Energy budget of wood-feeding larvae of Corymbia rubra (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)Aleksandra WALCZYNSKAEur. J. Entomol. 104 (2): 181-185, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.027 The energy budget of xylem-feeding Corymbia rubra (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) larvae was estimated by determining bioenergetic parameters. The values of several of the life history and bioenergetic parameters of this wood-feeding insect are exceptional and associated with specific adaptations to living in and feeding on wood. The energy budget of C. rubra sheds light on the life strategy of a xylem-feeder. Its slow growth (0.012 mg × mg-1 × d-1) is associated with a low consumption rate (0.097 mg × mg-1 × d-1) and the low nutritional value of its food (the assimilation efficiency is 34%). The gross growth and net growth efficiency are 15% and 43%, respectively. |
Density dependence of the alarm pheromone effect in pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae)Grit KUNERT, Janett TRAUTSCH, Wolfgang W. WEISSEREur. J. Entomol. 104 (1): 47-50, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.007 The aphid alarm pheromone is known to trigger wing induction in pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum). In reaction to alarm pheromone, aphids drop off the plant or walk away. While searching for a new feeding site they repeatedly encounter other members of the aphid colony and this increased contact rate is assumed to be important for wing induction ("pseudo-crowding" hypothesis). Because the encounter rate is a function of aphid colony size, wing induction in aphids in the presence of a predator should be a function of the number of aphids on the plant. We placed two, seven or 13 adult pea aphids on bean plants, and exposed the different-sized colonies to synthetic alarm pheromone to test the density-dependence of predator-induced wing induction. The mean percentage of winged morphs among the offspring produced on the plants ranged from 10 to 80 percent and increased both with aphid number and exposure to alarm pheromone. There was no synergy between aphid number and alarm pheromone exposure indicating that both factors are additive. The implications for aphid metapopulation dynamics are discussed. |
Acceptance of two native myrmecophilous species, Platyarthrus hoffmannseggii (Isopoda: Oniscidea) and Cyphoderus albinus (Collembola: Cyphoderidae) by the introduced invasive garden ant Lasius neglectus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in BelgiumWouter DEKONINCK, Koen LOCK, Frans JANSSENSEur. J. Entomol. 104 (1): 159-161, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.023 The myrmecophilous isopod Platyarthrus hoffmannseggii Brandt, 1833 and the myrmecophilous springtail Cyphoderus albinus Nicolet, 1842 are commonly found in nests of a wide range of ant species in Belgium. Here we report the first record of both myrmecophiles in nests of the invasive garden ant Lasius neglectus in the Citadelpark of Ghent, Belgium. Platyarthrus hoffmannseggii was found in two of the Lasius neglectus nests studied. In one of the two C. albinus was also discovered. In the localities where the invasive garden ant Lasius neglectus was introduced, as is also the case in the Citadelpark in Ghent, it out-competes all native ant species. This ant has a dramatic effect on the local native ant fauna. However, some of the myrmecophilous species associated with the native ant-fauna are less threatened as they are accepted by this invasive garden ant. |
Community structure and reproductive biology of bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) associated with Macaronesian Euphorbia shrubsBjarte H. JORDALEur. J. Entomol. 103 (1): 71-80, 2006 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2006.012 Dead wood of arborescent Euphorbia plants in the Macaronesian islands and Morocco has a diverse fauna of wood-boring beetles. Thirty-eight species were found in four species groups of Euphorbia, including 29 species of scolytine bark beetles, six species of cossonine weevils, two species of Laemophloeidae and one of Monotomidae. All scolytines (but not cossonines and cucujoids) have narrow host preferences, using only one host group for feeding and reproduction. The number of islands on which each species was found was also limited, resulting in geographically distinct guilds for each Euphorbia host. The majority of species (26) were found on the E. lamarckii species complex, followed by E. balsamifera (13) and the succulents E. canariense (12) and E. echinus (3), while only two species were found on the rare montane species, E. longifolia, in Madeira. Up to six or seven species could be found in a single branch of E. lamarckii and E. canariense, respectively, but more than half of the plants had fewer than three species. Putative niche partitioning was indicated by the alternative utilization of different tissues in E. balsamifera and different moisture preferences in the succulent E. canariense. Several unusual features of bark beetle reproductive biology were also observed, including infrequent communal nesting and very small broods. Taken together with the phylogenetic, geographical and biological data now available for most species associated with dead Euphorbia, several of the beetle guilds should provide promising model systems for studying of species interactions and community structure. |
Mitochondrial DNA provides an insight into the mechanisms driving diversification in the ithomiine butterfly Hyposcada anchiala (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Ithomiinae)Alaine WHINNETT, Keith R. Entomol. 102 (4): 633-639, 2005 Geographic subspecies of several ithomiine butterflies on the lower east Andean slopes display a black and orange "melanic tiger" aposematic wing pattern that occurs from Colombia to Bolivia, while geographically adjacent lowland subspecies typically bear a coloured, "tiger" pattern. However, it is not clear whether subspecies with similar wing patterns in different regions have arisen through independent events of convergent adaptation, possibly through parapatric differentiation, or result from allopatric differentiation, as proposed by the refuge hypothesis. Here, we examine geographic patterns of divergence in the widespread and common ithomiine butterfly Hyposcada anchiala. We present phylogenetic hypotheses for 5 subspecies of H. anchiala, based on 1567 bp mitochondrial DNA. All topologies indicated that a single switch in mimetic pattern best explained the wing patterning of the H. anchiala studied here. This finding suggests that the subspecies of H. anchiala studied here result from at least two stages of differentiation, and is consistent with a single colonisation into a novel altitudinal zone coincident with a wing pattern switch, followed by subsequent divergence within, rather than across altitudinal zones. The subspecies divergences indicated diversifications were consistent with the Pleistocene. Furthermore, the lowland subspecies were more recently derived than the montane taxa, in contrast to predictions of the "Andean species pump" hypothesis. |
Linkage analysis of the visible mutations Sel and Xan of Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) using SSR markersXuexia MIAO, Muwang LI, Fangyin DAI, Cheng LU, Marian R. GOLDSMITH, Yongping HUANGEur. J. Entomol. 104 (4): 647-652, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.081 Wild type silkworm larvae have opaque white skin, whereas the mutants Sel (Sepialumazine) and Xan (Xanthous) are yellow-skinned. Previous genetic analysis indicated that Sel and Xan are on established linkage groups 24 (0.0) and 27 (0.0), respectively. However, in constructing a molecular linkage map using simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci, we found that the two mutations were linked. To confirm this finding, we developed a set of SSR markers and used them to score reciprocal backcross populations. Taking advantage of the lack of crossing-over in female silkworms, we found that the progeny of backcrosses between F1 females and males of the parental strains (BC1F) of the two visible mutations had the same inheritance patterns linked to the same SSR markers. This indicated that the two visible mutations belonged to the same chromosome. To confirm this finding, we tested for independent assortment by crossing Sel and Xan marker strains with each other to obtain F1 and F2 populations. Absence of the expected wild type class among 5000 F2 progeny indicated that the two visible mutations were located on the same linkage group. We carried out recombination analysis for each mutation by scoring 190 progeny of backcrosses between F1 males and parental females (BC1M) and constructed a linkage map for each strain. The results indicated that the Sel gene was 12 cM from SSR marker S2404, and the Xan gene was 7.03 cM from SSR marker S2407. To construct a combined SSR map and to avoid having to discriminate the two similar dominant mutations in heterozygotes, we carried out recombination analysis by scoring recessive wild type segregants of F2 populations for each mutation. The results showed that the Sel and Xan genes were 13 cM and 13.7 cM from the S2404 marker, respectively, consistent with the possibility that they are alleles of the same locus, which we provisionally assigned to SSR linkage group 24. We also used the F2 recessive populations to construct two linkage groups for the Sel and Xan genes. |
Climate signals are reflected in an 89 year series of British Lepidoptera recordsRoger L.H. DENNIS, Tim H. SPARKSEur. J. Entomol. 104 (4): 763-767, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.097 Historical data sources on abundance of organisms are valuable for determining responses of those organisms to climate change and coincidence of changes amongst different organisms. We investigate data on the general abundance of Lepidoptera over an 89 year period 1864-1952. We related abundance to monthly mean temperature and precipitation and the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index, and to numbers of migrants from an independent source. Abundances of Lepidoptera were significantly positively correlated with current year temperatures for May to September and November and significantly negatively correlated with temperatures in January. Numbers were also negatively correlated with rainfall for April and May and annual total of the current year and with August in the previous year. Abundance of Lepidoptera decreased significantly with an increasing winter NAO index. Increased overall abundance in Lepidoptera coincided significantly with increased numbers of migrants. The climate associations were very similar to those previously reported for butterfly data collected by the British Butterfly Monitoring Scheme; although warm and drier summers were generally beneficial to Lepidoptera populations, wet summers and winters and mild winters were not. We discuss the implications for Lepidoptera biology and populations in regions of Britain in the face of projected climate changes. |
Influence of different diets and oviposition substrates on Lygus rugulipennis biology (Heteroptera: Miridae)Gianandrea SALERNO, Francesca FRATI, Eric CONTI, Ferdinando BINEur. J. Entomol. 104 (3): 417-423, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.061 The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different diets on the development and reproduction of Lygus rugulipennis Poppius (Heteroptera: Miridae). Using 2 laboratory generations (F1 and F2) obtained from field-collected L. rugulipennis, the following diets were tested: beans, beans plus Tenebrio molitor (L.) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) pupae, and a commercial artificial diet, which was developed for mass rearing of Lygus hesperus Knight. As oviposition substrates, beans and agar/parafilm rolls were used. Our data show that both the artificial diet and the artificial oviposition substrate were ineffective substitutes for beans for both laboratory generations. Stage-dependent and total survival rates clearly indicated that F1 Lygus bugs survive significantly longer when they are reared on vegetable substrates i.e., beans and beans plus pupae. The differential effects of the diets were more pronounced in the F2 generation, in which the embryonic development was longer for eggs from females reared on the artificial diet than on beans, and in which the second instar nymphs did not survive on the artificial diet. Both the total duration of post-embryonic development and the longevity of F1 males were shorter on the artificial diet than on beans. Female fecundity was affected by diet in terms of total duration of the oviposition period and mean number of eggs laid/female, since these parameters were lower on the artificial substrate, compared with those obtained on the bean substrate. However, the diet did not affect the morphological parameters, as there were no significant variations in weight, width of cephalic capsule, and tibia and hemelytra length. Since L. rugulipennis cannot be reared on the commercially available artificial diet, we discuss the necessity to improve both the artificial diet and oviposition substrate so that this Lygus bug and its specific egg parasitod Anaphes fuscipennis Haliday (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) can be mass reared. |
"Nymphes plissées" structure of the cuticle of juveniles of some oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatida)Jaroslav SMR®Eur. J. Entomol. 104 (3): 619-629, 2007 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2007.077 The cuticular structure of juveniles of several oribatids of different families with wrinkled cuticles were compared: Hermannia gibba, Tectocepheus velatus, Scutovertex minutus, Achipteria coleoptrata and Eupelops occultus. Both the surface and internal structures of the "plissée" were studied. Light microscopy revealed several patterns in mites studied with Masson's triple stain and these results were supported by TEM. Although the "plissée" looks similar at the body surface, the structure and ultrastructure differ among groups. Some types of wrinkling is supported by small muscles, probably for changing body shape. Differences in the structure of the cuticle of the prosoma and opisthosoma were observed. The differences in the wrinkling in the cuticle in diferent lines is associated with change in the body shape in response to different moisture conditions. |

Intermorphic queens observed in M. graminicola (Europe), M. nipponica (Japan), M. americana (North America; reported for the first time) and M. sp. A (Java) were reconstructed as an ancestral trait in this genus. Molecular-clock-based age estimates suggest that queen polymorphism evolved in Myrmecina at the latest during the Miocene. Kairomone involvement in the host specificity of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae)Gianandrea SALERNO, Eric CONTI, Ezio PERI, Stefano COLAZZA, Ferdinando BINEur. J. Entomol. 103 (2): 311-318, 2006 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2006.040 This paper reports the results of a comparative laboratory analysis of the behavioural responses of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) to semiochemical cues from four species of pentatomid bugs, Nezara viridula (L.), Eurydema ventrale Klt., Murgantia histrionica Hahn. and Graphosoma semipunctatum F. (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). In a Y-tube olfactometer, T. basalis was attracted by volatile chemicals from N. viridula, but not from other pentatomid species. In an open arena, the parasitoid reacted to chemical trails left on filter paper by all the species but most intensely to those left by N. viridula. However, upon encountering pentatomid eggs, T. basalis examined more intensely and probed more frequently the eggs of G. semipunctatum than those of the other species. The parasitoid only parasitized and emerged from eggs of G. semipunctatum and N. viridula; those of the other species were unsuitable. Therefore N. viridula is semiochemically confirmed to be a coevolved host (old association) of T. basalis, whereas G. semipunctatum may be a potential non-coevolved host (new association). The utility of these tests for defining a parasitoids' host specificity and in assessing the risk of non-target effects in biological control is discussed. |
Number of larval instars and sex-specific plasticity in the development of the small heath butterfly, Coenonympha pamphilus (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)Enrique GARCÍA-BARROSEur. J. Entomol. 103 (1): 47-53, 2006 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2006.007 The number of larval moults, larval head capsule width and pupal weight were investigated in both direct-developing and diapausing individuals of a South-West European population of Coenonympha pamphilus. The frequency distributions of head widths of successive larval instars overlapped, partly due to variation in the number of larval moults. The larvae that entered diapause went through five instars, instead of the four reported from this species. The evidence indicates that the five instar developmental pathway represents a plastic response rather than an example of compensatory growth. This alternative growth pattern was expressed in response to short photoperiods in parallel with, or as a consequence of, larval diapause. On average, the larvae with five instars had larger heads than their normal siblings. This resulted in comparatively heavier male pupae, while the opposite trend occurred in females. It is concluded that the variation in the number of larval instars is a plastic response to diapause when temperatures remain mild and that it might have an adaptive value in areas with mild winter climates. The sexually dimorphic expression in the larval growth patterns, in terms of pupal weight, may well imply different patterns of allocation of larval resources to adult structures, although sex-dependent differences in investment into purely larval structures cannot be discounted. |
The assemblages of aquatic Coleoptera from shallow lakes in the northern Iberian Meseta: Influence of environmental variablesLuis F. VALLADARES, Josefina GARRIDO, Francisco GARCÍA-CRIADOEur. J. Entomol. 99 (3): 289-298, 2002 | DOI: 10.14411/eje.2002.040 Aquatic Coleoptera in shallow lakes associated with the Canal de Castilla (Palencia Province, Spain) in the northern Iberian Meseta were sampled over the course of a year (spring 1998-winter 1999). These waterbodies are typical plateau wetlands with dense vegetation and vary in permanence and area (from 3.3 ha to 29.35 ha). Oxygen concentration, conductivity and pH were recorded at the time of sampling. Lake area, depth, water permanence and type of vegetation were also taken into account. Ninety two species were collected. Species richness was high in comparison with other wetlands in Spain. The assemblage structure was assessed in terms of three community parameters: richness, abundance and diversity (Shannon index). Their relationships with environmental variables were explored using correlation coefficients. The assemblage composition was analysed by multivariate techniques. First, the sites were classified by means of TWINSPAN. The presence of each species in the different TWINSPAN groups was used to assess their habitat preferences. Second, the sites and species were ordinated by Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) using the CANOCO statistical package. Richness was significantly correlated with water permanence, conductivity and aquatic macrophyte cover. The first DCA axis was significantly correlated with water permanence and conductivity, but not with any of the other parameters. Conductivity was significantly inter-correlated with permanence. Therefore, water permanence and aquatic vegetation cover seem to be the main factors influencing richness, but only water permanence appears to determine species composition. |
